When asked to write about one thing in the Houston area she loves, Harris County Precinct Two Commissioner Sylvia Garcia chose the San Jacinto Monument. One of the reasons I am in love with Houston is because this region is populated by so many historic sites. Being the history buff I am, my favorite spot in town is the San Jacinto Monument and Museum. I am a Texan and that can explain why I feel this way. As you approach the park where it stands, the San Jacinto Monument makes you travel in ...

Harris County Precinct Two Commissioner Sylvia R. Garcia initiated the art project to include education and history in a public building by incorporating Pasadena’s history in the lobby. “I want a public lobby that will engage anybody who walks into the building in the story of settlement, growth and progress that is Pasadena,” said Commissioner Garcia. “I hope to see the entire community become as excited as we are about the potential for including actual pieces of Pasadena’s history in th

For an upcoming story on the restoration project at Sylvan Beach, I wanted to set up a photo with some people in it. I called La Porte Parks and Recreation Director Stephen Barr, who has been my primary source on this story since the project began in April. Barr, ever helpful and a pretty good photographer himself, filed all the paper work to get grants to pay for the beach renourishment work, and I thought he would be a logical choice to be in the photo. He was a bit reluctant to be the only ...

Do you use Twitter? I do. Then I realized that some people don’t even know what that means. For example, my best friend and I were away this weekend to participate in a half-marathon. She said something very unique and in response I told her I had to "Tweet" it. I whipped out my phone and "Tweeted" that "Katy says we are like cows headed to slaughter" as we lined up with 31,000 other people at the start line. Lots of people that follow my "Tweets" thought it was a funny line and ...
