Precinct Two Park Certified for Conservation and Green Initiatives

Commissioner Sylvia R. Garcia’s commitment to “greening” Precinct Two has been recognized with official certification of the Gene Green Beltway 8 Park by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The Certified Rating is achieved by meeting standards set forth through the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) System.

Among the design elements cited in recognizing the 230 acre park are design systems utilizing natural treatments to effectively cleanse storm water including runoff from buildings and pavement. Another element in the recognized design is the use of efficient irrigation systems and native plants to reduce the need for watering.

“Our team worked from the initial design stages to make this park both an enjoyable site for families and a model for the way to build in the future,” said Commissioner Garcia. “The use of recycled products and energy-efficient materials requires extra effort, but it is well worth it in the long-run.”

Other elements cited by the report include:

** Use of faucet-sensors and waterless urinals in the restrooms;

** Energy-efficient lighting;

** Materials with low emissions of vapors and pollutants;

** Energy-efficient air conditioning systems;

** Natural plants used to maximize green space and water efficiency.

The park includes an amphitheater, spray park, dog park, BMX racing facility, basketball and tennis courts, picnic areas and a two mile hiking trail that loops the park.
