On Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009, Monica Perales, Associate Professor of History and on behalf of the Friends of Women's Studies at the University of Houston, interviewed Harris County Commissioner Sylvia R. Garcia about her life and groundbreaking career.

 

Sylvia R. Garcia has represented Harris County Precinct Two as Commissioner since January 2003 when she became the first Hispanic and the first woman to be elected Harris County Commissioner in her own right.  Prior to her election as Commissioner, Garcia served as City Controller for the City of Houston since 1998.

Commissioner Garcia worked as a Social Worker while earning her law degree from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University in 1978.  She earned her undergraduate degree at Texas Women's University in 1972. Recently, Garcia was appointed to the region-wide Hurricane Ike Recovery Committee and elected President of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO).
