Mayor Parker Taps Garcia for Service

Houston City Council unanimously approved Mayor Parker’s nomination of Commissioner Garcia to serve as Chair of the newly created ‘Independent Police Oversight Board’ (Board). The Board will review internal police investigations of possible misconduct by employees of the Houston Police Department. These may include allegations of excessive force, discharge of firearms, serious bodily injury or death and all other internal investigations as well as investigations involving mistreatment of residents.

Sylvia Garcia made history eight years ago by becoming the first woman in her own right to be elected Harris County Commissioner. When Garcia leaves on Friday, it's back to men only on Commissioners Court. Garcia is the fourth female commissioner since the court was established in 1876.
